Bentley EXP 9 F to be redesigned for production - report

Too ugly for consumers?

The Bentley EXP 9 F concept was introduced to a sea of criticism, so isn't terribly surprising the model will be redesigned for production.

According to What Car?, the company knows the styling was "a little heavy handed" and a new design is already being developed. It will likely have traditional SUV styling as well as smaller headlights that are located closer to the grille.

While a similar styling fiasco helped to kill the Aston Martin Lagonda concept, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer hinted a production verison could be launched in 2015.

Gavin Green on that Bentley SUV and great British luxury cars

The Germans have done a fine job at running the British car industry. Every major British-bred car company – Land Rover, Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Mini, Aston Martin – has a German boss. Most of these companies are doing very well, Land Rover, Mini and Rolls-Royce spectacularly so.

The three best British cars of the past decade – the Range Rover, Rolls-Royce Phantom and Mini hatch – were all engineered by BMW. The other brilliant Brit of that era, the Discovery 3, began development under ex-BMW man Wolfgang Reitzle’s enlightened chairmanship of the Premier Automotive Group, then parent company of Land Rover.

We owe our German car friends a lot. They saved our precious premium car industry.

Just occasionally the Germans get it wrong
But just occasionally they get it wrong, misunderstanding the subtle nuances that are ‘Brand Britain’. The Mini hatch was spot-on, never mind the loose packaging that ran contrary to Issigonis’s original vision. Red-hot sales – from the United States to the United Kingdom, from Shanghai to Stuttgart – prove BMW’s execution was perfect. As we all know, the Mini hatch – designed by an American with substantial British input – is a little charmer.

But as BMW multiplies its latest Munich-designed Mini offerings, so you begin to wonder. The Clubman is not a success. The goggle-eyed Countryman looks like something fished out of the deep, and is by some margin the worst new car I have driven over the past year. Don’t even consider one. Just buy a Golf.

Bentley: Bling is not British
Then there is the Bentley SUV concept, which at least provided some comic relief to what was otherwise a rather serious 2012 Geneva motor show. This was an attempt by Bentley’s German leaders at a British luxury SUV. It was a flashy flop not because a Bentley SUV is inappropriate – the commercial logic is clear. Rather, its crass execution was totally at odds with classy British luxury, and with past fine Bentley saloons and GTs.

Great British upmarket cars – all of them – have a subtlety about their luxury. It’s inbred, rather like royalty. It’s palpably there but never flaunted. It’s an innate feeling, not extra features.

It’s all about the inner quality, not the bling veneer. It’s Savile Row for the street: materials, cut, durability, timelessness. Check out the latest Range Rover or the Rolls Phantom, both designed by Brits. They’re imposing but elegant. Or look at the better Jaguars. Or the latest Continental GT V8…

The Germans sometimes do not do high luxury well. They’re brilliant at functional premium – think Leica cameras or the Mercedes S-class. No country does in-depth quality engineering so convincingly, or so proudly. No country does simple unfussed design better (look at recent Audis). But when they try to ladle on the luxury, it can go wrong.

Like the blingy souped-up AMG Mercs of a few years back. Or the German tuning shop-tarted Porsches and BMWs. Or the Maybach, Germany’s homegrown ‘rival’ to Rolls-Royce, whose creators (Mercedes-Benz) mistakenly thought that an S-class with extra lashings of tonnage, trim and tree constituted ‘high luxury’.

Or like the Bentley EXP 9F.

Fizeram tudo errado neste SUV.

Entirely redesigned Bentley SUV to be called Falcon - report

Recent report indicates that Bentley's upcoming SUV could be called Falcon and is expected to look entirely different than the concept.
The Bentley EXP 9 F concept is anything but a beautiful car. However, this might change according to AutomobileMag who is reporting that the SUV will be redesigned from the ground up by Luc Donckerwolke, Bentley's new design chief. The vehicle has been given the green light by the product strategy team and could reach showrooms by 2015.
Other pending premium car projects on VW Group's list for at least 12 months include the Lamborghini Urus, Bugatti Galibier and the Bentley Azure convertible.

Falcon?!

While at Pebble Beach, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer sat down with Inside Line to elaborate on plans for the production version of its controversial EXP 9 F concept SUV. As recently as a month ago, the blue behemoth was still being talked about as if a final decision hadn't been made, Durheimer didn't appear to show any reticence when discussing what the report cited as "the 2015 production date."

The big news is that no "radical redesign" of its exterior is planned before it arrives. That could be wordplay hinging on the term "radical," since reports of a redesign surfaced the same month the EXP 9 F was revealed, and a report in Autocar last month cited Volkswagen Group sources as saying "the front and rear end styling would need to be modified" for production. On the other hand, Dürheimer told Inside Line that Bentley customers rated the looks of the SUV "only a 7 out of 10."

We're not sure if he meant the word "only" in humility or sarcasm; Dürheimer has plenty of cheek, as evidenced in his line that Bentley has "solved [the] problem" of there being no SUV on the market above the $170,000 mark.

At whatever price that ends up being, the EXP 9 F will be able to go off-road but won't be a devoted off-roader, capable enough, however, to handle Middle Eastern dunes, polo fields and yacht launches. And don't let anyone tell you that Bentley doesn't care about the help, either: the lauded interior, which isn't expected to change much for production, might get optional third-row seating for the owner's au pair. All those Swedish lasses can rest easy now.

Bentley CEO Says SUV Nearing Final Approval, will Feature a Modified Design

Last October, it was reported that due to the European crisis, the VW Group might delay a decision regarding the production of two luxury SUVs for its Bentley and Lamborghini brands previewed last year by the EXP 9 F and Urus Concepts respectively. We still don't know what the German group's plans are for Lamborghini, but Bentley boss Wolfgang Schreiber told Autonews Europe that the company is "close to a decision to build" the EXP 9 F, with an expected introduction date in 2016.

Schreiber added that the concept's controversial styling will be toned down to bring it more in line with the rest of Bentley's lineup.
"The main intention was not to show the final styling but to get feedback from the market," Schreiber told reporters at last week's Detroit auto show. "If you saw the styling, you would say, 'That is a real Bentley.'"

Bentley's SUV will share its underpinnings with respective models from Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen, with Schreiber stating that it likely will be offered with a V8 and possibly a W12 option.
"Bentleys are luxury cars, but people like this effortless acceleration and torquey engines," he said, according to Autonews Europe.
