The Giugiaro X-GT Looks Like An Italian Rally Fighter

One of the coolest cars in the world is the nigh-indestructible Rally Fighter built and sold in the US. Now VW has unveiled a Giugiaro concept called the X-GT that apes that Baja-style racer.

Well, much as the X-GT apes the Local Motors in low-nose DeTomaso-esque styling, the engineering appears to be more VW Dakar racer than anything else. The Local Motors is front-engined while this Giugiaro concept, taken on stage by Walter de Silva, seems to have the engine behind the cabin.

All of our information is coming from tweets at VW's Group Night presentation, so we will fill in details as they come.

Public reception seems to be poor at the moment, but we like it.

Genebra: ItalDesign Giugiaro Parcour

Volkswagen-owned styling house ItalDesign Giugiaro has created a compact sports car/SUV crossover based on Lamborghini running gear for the Geneva motor show.

The concept is called Parcour and has been developed as both a coupé and a roadster. It uses a mid/rear-mounted 542bhp 5.2-litre V10 and an all-wheel drive system from Lamborghini. Italdesign says the concept blends elements from SUVs, crossovers, sports cars and GTs and is designed to offer supercar performance on any road surface.

At 4530mm long, 2070mm wide and 1335mm high, it is roughly the same length and width as a Range Rover Evoque but is considerably lower. It weighs 1550kg and can crack 0-62mph in 3.6sec, with a 199mph top speed.

The Parcour sits on 22-inch alloy wheels and its ride height can be hydraulically adjusted in a range from 210mm to 330mm. Four different modes for this are offered: comfort, off-road, winter and track.

Italdesign claims a new type of suspension system for the Parcour. It is a pushrod-style set-up, but the pushrods are replaced by eight coil-overs, two at each corner. This is said to better blend on-road and off-road performance.

The idea behind the two-seater is inspired by the sport parkour, where you adapt your body to cross obstacles in any given environment.

Giugiaro Parcour Concept - Genebra 2013

Posiblemente el Parcour Concept desarrollado por Italdesign y que lleva el sello de Giugiaro en el frontal sea uno de los modelos más llamativos del Salón del Automóvil de Ginebra. Y desde luego no es para menos, con esa mezcla de conceptos que complican francamente definirlo en un segmento.

Rasgos de Lancia Stratos, Dodge y Lamborghini recorren las curvas de su carrocería de súper deportivo... sobre elevado. Sí, tiene una distancia al suelo poco habitual y que le permitiría circular por caminos sin problemas. Por supuesto con 550 CV de potencia las prestaciones están aseguradas, pudiendo pasar de 0 a 100 km/h en sólo 3,6 segundos. El cambio secuencial de doble embrague con siete velocidades y la tracción total también forman parte del apartado mecánico del Parcour Concept.

¿Veremos algo parecido en el mercado? Pues sinceramente me cuesta creerlo, pero si gusta quizás en VAG se lo planteen. Al fin y al cabo, si el XL1 tiene su hueco, este concepto también podría convertirse en el sueño de muchos multimillonarios.

Apesar de achar que o concept do Giugiaro necessita de mais trabalho de desenvolvimento, apostaria mais depressa nele para um "SUV" para a Lamborghini do que a proposta Urus.

Think of famous Italian design firms and you'll likely conjure up names like Pininfarina, Bertone and Zagato. But don't forget Italdesign. The firm started by Giorgetto Giugiaro has been responsible for more designs for more automakers than we would care to count. Like Ford bought Ghia in 1970 and De Tomaso took overVignale the year before that, Italdesign Giugiaro was subsumed into the Volkswagen Group (via Audi andLamborghini) in 2010 – but that hasn't stopped the studio from creating.

Italdesign did up a couple of hatchback concepts for Volkswagen which it unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011, came back to the same show the following year with the Brivido sports car concept, and the year after (that being last year) with the show-stopping Parcour crossover super-coupe concept. So what has it got in store for this year?

Giorgetto and company aren't saying just yet, but they have released this solitary teaser image that shows us... very little. All we can see is the front end obscured by shining headlights. It appears to be more car-like in height and stance than a crossover or truck, with wide haunches and, in typical show-car style, side-view cameras in place of traditional mirrors. It also appears to be wearing Giugiaro's own G logo and not the emblem of one of VW's many brands. But that's about all there is to see or say.

Our compatriots at Ward's Auto seem to think it's a sedan, possibly taking a similar form to the Maserati Quattroporte, the Gran Lusso concept (itself a coupe) which Pininfarina designed for BMW last year or previewing a new four-door for Bugatti, which itself has already committed to making a new supercar coupe to take over from the Veyron, not a sedan like the Galibier. Whatever it is, we're sure it'll be striking when Italdesign pulls off the veil at the Geneva show next week.
