Incident: TAP E195 near Porto on Sep 5th 2022, burst tyre suspected
By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, Sep 6th 2022 16:20Z, last updated Tuesday, Sep 6th 2022 16:20Z

A TAP Air Portugal Embraer ERJ-195, registration CS-TTY performing flight TP-827 from Milan Malpensa (Italy) to Lisbon (Portugal), had departed Malpensa's runway 35R, climbed to FL370 enroute and was descending towards Lisbon, when the aircraft turned to divert to Porto (Portugal). The aircraft landed safely on Porto's runway 17 about 35 minutes after turning off the descent to Lisbon.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Porto for about 2:40 hours, then continued the flight and landed safely in Lisbon with a delay of about 4 hours.

The airline reported the aircraft diverted as a precaution over a possible technical issue, which was not confirmed after landing.

According to information The Aviation Herald the crew suspected a tyre had burst on departure from Milan, it was deemed more prudent to divert to Porto rather than land in Lisbon.

Decision

That just reveals that maybe Lisbon should not be restricted to only one runway.
However, considering the operacional impact that a runway blocked in Lisbon would have, it seems like a good decision.

My only questions hanging are:

- did they have enough fuel for an alternate landing should the landing at Porto not be possible?

- Did they have spare material at Porto (consider also possible damage to the wheel structure.

- Was it coordinated with ATC as early as possible.

- Why did it divert to Porto only after having started descend towards Lisbon?

Considering the answer to these questions, then the decision might have been a good one, however it seems to me that it might have been taken earlier in flight, adjusting the flight route and path in order to optimize the fuel being carried, since this was unexpected.

They diverted to Porto so as not to cause more delays than those already in Lisbon if the problem were confirmed, it is better to divert to Porto which has fewer flights

Basically TAP decided for the airplane to go to Porto because closing the runway there would be better than closing the runway in Lisbon.
All for operational reasons really.

A mistery?

Really, it is very strange this diversion.
Why???

why divert to OPO ?
By ADS on Tuesday, Sep 6th 2022 16:35Z

so from the point of diversion it flew about 50% longer to get to OPO than if it had just continued to LIS

is the runway in OPO better for burst tyres ?
