Tiago Monteiro says the new Honda has more unlocked potential

"Castrol Honda Racing Team JAS driver Tiago Monteiro believes there’s more to come from the new Honda Civic WTCC, after finishing fifth in race one in Marrakech and running as high a second in race two until he was forced to stop with a broken floor.

The Portuguese driver was the only works Honda in the race after the withdrawal of Gabriele Tarquini, whose car was heavily damaged in FP2 on Saturday.

Monteiro made a good start and was up to fifth at the start of race one, though he was passed by the Campos Racing Chevrolet of Dusan Borkovic on lap four but regained the position when Borkovic received a time penalty post-race.

In race two, Monteiro avoided the trouble at the start between Proteam’s Mehdi Bennani and ROAL’s Tom Coronel and was up to second, but with a damaged underside he slowly fell down the order and was eventually given a mechanical black flag by the stewards as the car was shedding debris on to the circuit.

“The result is what it is, but we have to take the positives out of that and we learned,” said Monteiro to TouringCarTimes. “We understood some of the small issues that we had throughout the weekend, so you’re always evolving, always learning.

“Now we need time. We need to keep on doing our development work. We really discovered some important areas this weekend, it was actually like a live test. The result could have been better, but then it could have been worse. It was difficult to start with just one car, it is a shame what happened to Gabriele.”

Monteiro also commented on the apprarent flagility of the new TC1 cars, with the two Hondas both losing their rear bumpers in race one, and with both Monteiro and ROAL’s Tom Chilton suffering with broken flat floors in the race which scattered carbon fibre shrapnel on to the track.

“In my case, the hit from Borkovic was quite hard, I lost the bumper but it wasn’t a slight push, so you would expect it. There are a lot more aerodynamic parts, so when you touch you see more parts going off and all of those parts are carbon, last year it was a lot more metal.”

Honda Europe Motorsport Manager William De Braekeleer was optimistic following the race, with the Honda Civic gathering pace throughout the weekend and still believes they will be able to close down the gap to Citroën.

“We’re disappointed to lose one car, but we made good progress on Saturday when Gabriele found a very good change in the set-up of the car, and we’ll try that in Le Castellet,” he said to TouringCarTimes. “We won’t make up the difference to Citroën in Le Castellet, but we may be a more consistent second.”

The team now have a battle on their hands to repair Gabriele Tarquini’s Civic before the next weekend which begins in just three days at Le Castellet. The car left the circuit on Saturday to head to Paul Ricard early, where a spell shell is being delivered so the JAS Motorsport team can re-shell the car before testing on Friday at 12:30 CET.

The team are covering the progress of the repair on a special section of their Facebook page ahead of the race."Em TouringCarTimes | Tiago Monteiro says the new Honda has more unlocked potential

Tom Coronel rules out racing at Paul Ricard after heavy crash

"ROAL Motorsport driver Tom Coronel is set to miss next weekend’s round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, after substantial damage sustained after a first lap crash with Proteam Racing’s Mehdi Bennani at the start of the second race in Marrakech.

The Chevrolet Cruze TC1 will require substantial repairs after the crash at the start in an incident between the Dutchman and Mehdi Bennani. Coronel moved across on Bennani at the start making contact with the Honda’s front-left. Coronel maintains that Bennani then kept pushing and spun him around, while Bennani believes it was Coronel who was trying to squeeze him into the wall.

The stewards sided with Coronel and gave Bennani a drive-through penalty which dropped him down the order, but he was able to recover to fifth thanks in part to a mid-race safety car.

“The car is a banana,” said Coronel to TouringCarTimes. “I will not be in France for sure. The whole bodyshell needs to be repaired. When we load the car it’ll be in Barcelona on Wednesay and it needs to be in France on Thursday, so it’s absolutely impossible.

“I saw everything. I made a reasonable start, I’m in the lead, I’m allowed to change my line, I gave him the space, he gave me one soft touch and then he kept on pushing and then he turned to the right and it was clear on TV as well. He kept on pushing, kept on pushing and then he turned to the right. I didn’t move more to the left after the first touch…but he just kept on pushing and then he turned to the right.

Bennani, racing at his home track for the first round of the season, believes it was Coronel who caused the track, and that the incident could have been avoided, and rues the missed opportunity to fight with Sébastien Loeb for the victory.

“I have spoken two or three times with Tom, and I think he knows that he went too much to my side and he put me directly into the wall,” said Bennani to TouringCarTimes. “The first touch I think he knows that I am here, but on the second touch there was nothing I could do, because I am two-millimetres from the wall, what do I do? Do I crash into the wall. I know Tom, he’s my friend and I thought he’d see me…when I am 2mm from the wall, what can I do? I can’t release the throttle as I’d be in more bullshit, as everyone would crash into me.

“I stayed in my line, if anything I went more to my left more than my line. I felt very bad (when I heard about the drive-through penalty), because I think we had the potential to fight with (Sébastien) Loeb.”"Em TouringCarTimes | Tom Coronel rules out racing at Paul Ricard after heavy crash

Cheira-me a esturro !!!!

"(...)“The main disappointment is the fact that it’s a part that brings no extra performance, and comes from an outside company. It was tested in Marrakech and it was working, it was tested before the start of the weekend and it was working, and now two of three weren’t working, and we don’t know why for the moment, but we have to accept it.”

The cut-off valve is part of the safety system which prevents fuel from dispensing in the case of accidental damage. Matton confirmed that this could easily have happened to another team as well, but acknowledges that Citroën were always at risk of being caught out by the different technical regulations in the WTCC, coming from a different motorsport.

“It’s possible that it could happen to everybody who has this type of part. I don’t know who is running this type of cut-off valve,” he said.

“For this weekend, the first thing will be to replace them and to try and understand why this happened, and in the future – there is more than one producer for this type of valve, so we’ll see if we change it if we think that we are not 100% safe with this brand.”

“It is also a new technology that we don’t use in rallying, this cut-off valve is something specific to touring cars.”

Matton added that Loeb and López are of course disappointed to lose out through a technical anomaly which is no fault of their own, but that they’re both understanding of the circumstances.

“They know that these things can happen. When you have done a perfect job you are always disappointed that you don’t have the reward, but they’ve been in motorsport a long time and it’s not the first time that they have had a disappointment (like this).”"Em TouringCarTimes | Yves Matton says Citroën will investigate cut-off valve failure
