Next generation BMW X3 to be built in South Africa as well

BMW has disclosed plans to make a 6 billion ZAR (about $420 million) investment at its Rosslyn factory in South Africa to get it ready for the next-gen X3 production.
About a month ago we heard BMW’s SA factory will be partially powered by manureand now the company has decided to move some of the next generation X3 production there to ease pressure on its U.S. facility. This decision was taken as a measure to free up production capacity at the Spartanburg factory in South Carolina where BMW will start making the X7 in a couple of years. To avoid overloading the Rosslyn assembly plant in South Africa, production of the 3-Series Sedan will be moved to another facility that can handle the extra work.
Codenamed G01, the all-new X3 SAV has already been caught on camera undergoing preliminary testing and will allegedly receive a long wheelbase derivative (G08). Both will ride on the CLAR platform that will command a healthy 100 kg (220 lbs) weight loss even though the new X3 will be slightly bigger than the current model (F25).
Expect to see the next-gen BMW X3 come out sometime in 2017 and will be followed shortly by the LWB model, but the latter could turn out to be a China-only affair.

Novo X3 será mais maior, mais forte, mais leve e mais económico...

O X3 tem em casa uma tremenda pressão. De baixo raspa o surpreendente X1 e a partir de cima o X5, distancia-se. No entanto, o novo X3 (código de desenvolvimento "G01") será desenvolvido pela BMW no seu novo sistema modular, mais flexível.
Um sistema de assentos redesenhado irá garantir maior variabilidade e maior conforto. Quando à condução contará com um híbrido plug-in que acopla um motor a gasolina de dois litros turbo com 245 cv com um motor elétrico de 95 cv. O desempenho do sistema é quase 300 cv, o torque cumulativo de 700 metros de Newton. O alcance máximo do modo elétrico rondar os 50 km, o que resulta num consumo previsto de 3,8 litros por 100 km. Irá permitir carregar baterias de iões de lítio na tomada de casa ou sem fios. O motor três cilindros não será fornecido no novo X3. Está previsto um aumento de desempenho em comparação com os seus antecessores, de pelo menos 15 hp em todos os motores. Está previsto que a partir de 2017, o X3 conte com uma motorização M40i com o 360 cv de três litros twin-turbo de seis cilindros em linha. Um ano depois, surgirá o X3 versão M com 422 cv.

Spy photos reveal BMW has commenced testing in United States of a hot M40i version for the third-generation X3 (G01).
As the attached spy images show, BMW is making its brand new rear-wheel-drive Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) a little bit bigger to distance it from the now larger front-wheel-drive X1. That won’t bring a weight penalty because the new X3 will ride on the CLAR platform and this is expected to come with a weight loss of around 220 pounds (100 kilograms). Seen here is an early prototype of the warm M40i model featuring provisional lighting clusters and most likely not all the body panels are final.
Those dual black exhaust tips are essentially sourced from the X4 M40i from where the hot X3 will borrow the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The motor is rated at 355 horsepower (265 kilowatts) and 343 pound-feet (465 newton meters) of torque in the X4 M40i and chances are these output figures will remain the same on the X3 M40i.
In terms of performance, the performance SAV will probably run the sprint to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 4.6 - 4.7 seconds taking into account the heavier X4 M40i needs 4.9 for the task. We expect the top speed to be electronically capped as usual at 155 mph (250 kph).
Should you need more performance, there is a spicy rumor concerning a full-blown X3 Mset to arrive later in the model’s life cycle with the same engine massaged to deliver approximately 500 horsepower.
Another derivative on the agenda is a long wheelbase model, but that one could end up being sold exclusively in China where rear legroom is very important for customers, regardless of segment.
BMW has already announced the next X3 will be built not only at the Spartanburg factory in South Carolina, United States, but also at the Rosslyn assembly plant in South Africa.
It remains to be seen when BMW will show the all-new X3, either in October at the Paris Motor Show or in January 2017 at the North American International Auto Show.

A BMW irá apresentar a terceira geração do seu SUV X3 já na próxima semana: será no dia 26 de junho, segunda-feira, nas suas instalações de Spartanburg (EUA) onde o modelo será produzido.

Tendo como base a plataforma CLAR - mesma do Série 7 e do novo Série 5 -, o novo X3 será mais leve em cerca de 100 kg e terá como inspiração os X1 e X5.
Fiel às suas motorizações sDrive e 4x4 com transmissão xDrive, o X3 contará ainda com outras duas versões mais amigas do ambiente: uma 100% elétrica e outra híbrido plug-in.
A variante elétrica deverá medir forças com os Audi Q6, Mercedes EQ e Jaguar I-Pace, enquanto a híbrido plug-in rivalizará com os Mercedes GLC 350e e o Audi Q5 e-tron.
Por fim, a versão M que contará com um seis cilindros 3.0 turbo capaz de debitar 360 cv de potência.
