...
Honestly it's one of the best compact hatchbacks made anywhere in the world, a car fit to take on the VW Golf for refinement and driving ability.

At the rear, the torsion beam axle is supplemented by a Watts linkage, which affords better axle articulation than the more typical (and cheaper) Panhard rod. This design allows the bushings that take the lateral loads to be separated from those that take the longitudinal. The former are stiff -- for handling finesse -- while the latter are soft for ride comfort.
It works. The previous Astra was fun to take through curves, but its ride was jittery. The new one has even more precision and resistance to understeer, while at the same time showing the sort of ride comfort that makes the VW Golf the class-leader for long-distance use.

2010 Opel Astra First Drive and Review - Motor Trend
TOPGEAR.com disse:Foreman has driven a prototype of this autumn’s Astra, and it’s a seriously good rival for the Focus or Golf.
Compare the design with the Insignia, and you can see the new-Vauxhall tune has been given a nifty remix. Like the side scallops, which are reversed. It’s a tidy job, with quality touches all over.
Inside, again there are strong Insignia influences, and again that’s absolutely no bad thing. This is a car many people will be given as a work tool, and they’ll be practically taking up residence in this cabin. So they’ll be glad there are tons of storage spaces, especially with the optional electric handbrake, which frees up console space. And thanks to ‘light pipes’ you get chintzy mood lighting around the console and door armrests. Just the thing to balm the soul at the end of a hard day’s commercial travelling.
The smooth, calm attitude extends to its on-the-road engineering too. The ride is far better than the old one, more pliant over big bumps, quieter and more stable on motorways.
And the handling? The current Astra is a laugh to drive, with enthusiastic engines and a sharp attitude to corners. The new one is even better in most departments: it grips harder and understeers less. And the better springing means it’s hardly upset by mid-corner bumps. The only slight downer is that the new steering has less feel than before.
I was in a 1.6 turbo. Its 180bhp shoves the new car along nicely. It has a six-speed box, but unlike Ford and VW, Vauxhall doesn’t have a twin-clutch option. The range will have loads of other choices too, including new 140bhp 1.4 turbo and (wee-hee) a 240bhp VXR.
autoexpress.co.uk disse:The dashboard has been lowered and moved forward away from the driver, which improves the visibility and driving position as well as giving a feeling of spaciousness. The storage space has been heavily revised to make it more useful and the rear-seat accommodation is large enough for three large adults for a long journey.
Underneath the skin new Astra takes its MacPherson-strut front suspension straight from the Insignia and the rear torsion-beam suspension has a number of changes to improve ride and cabin noise – weak points of the outgoing model. Most notable of these is the inclusion of a Watt’s Linkage to the rear axle.
This 220-year-old design dates back to the earliest days of the steam engine, but has been used since to reduce the rear-steer effect of side loadings when cornering. Vauxhall engineers have updated the linkage to reduce the unwanted movement of the torsion beam and in the process have replaced the hard, noise-transmitting mountings with much softer hydraulic units.
And it works. The Astra is noticeably quieter and more compliant than before. The ride is much improved, and the handling, which was sharp on the old model is just as precise. Job done then? Well not quite. The steering is light and lacks the feedback of a Focus.
You can specify a £700 optional Flexride variable damping system which allows drivers to choose from ‘normal’, ‘tour’ and ‘sport’ settings. It offers lots of choice but isn’t really worth the money. As for the engine, it’s strong from low revs and can hit 0-60mph in less than eight seconds, with a top speed of 140mph. It all bodes well for the future.

» Autoblog.nl
