Dodge Challenger SRT-8

Reborn American muscle car is back in Britain, but can it live up to the original?

rating_4.gif

It's among the most famous American models ever... and after a 35-year absence, it’s set to return to the UK! What’s more, the Challenger currently looks like one of the best-value performance cars on sale today.

Although Dodge UK has yet to confirm its plans for the big machine, this SRT-8 range-topper has a 6.1-litre V8 and costs the equivalent of just over £20,000. In comparison, its 0-60mph time of 4.9 seconds matches the Maserati GranTurismo 4.7 – and that will set you back £90,000! The engine is the same as in the top-of-the-line 300C SRT-8, but with new twin rectangular exhausts, the 425bhp unit sounds even more spectacular. Press the starter button and a deep burble fills the air. Every dip of the throttle gives a deafening bark – it sounds every bit the archetypal American muscle car.

It looks the part, too. While it’s much longer and taller than the original, it has taken many design cues from its predecessor such as the hooded headlights, long bonnet and even mirrors moulded from the first car’s.

At nearly 2,000kg, the new Challenger is a brute. But, with all this bulk, can it handle the UK’s twisty roads? Surprisingly, the answer is yes. Its Brembo brakes are fade-free and do a great job, while the Goodyear F1 tyres are very grippy.

The body is remarkably stable and everything is controllable. However, this is with the ESP on. There are two ‘off’ modes. The first reins in the rear end when it gets too lively, and it’s this we’d choose for the public road. Turn off the ESP altogether and the Dodge becomes more tail-happy than an over-excited puppy.

Unlike the exterior, the cabin isn’t particularly authentic, but it’s very well screwed together and the controls are simple to use. One advantage of the Dodge’s oversized dimensions is its good interior space. There is room for five adults and the boot can swallow a load of kit.

As you’d expect, running costs are high. Even with the ‘fuel-efficient’ 3.5-litre V6 diesel due next year, the car still musters only 22.5mpg. Dodge doesn’t publish economy figures for the SRT-8 – which tells you something. But then, who buys a 6.1-litre performance car to conserve petrol?

Next year’s line-up will also include a 5.7-litre petrol engine. In the meantime, a small number of left-hand-drive Challenger SRT-8s are on sale in the UK, but these are going at a whopping £49,995. We’d wait until the fever dies down and import one ourselves for much less in 2009.

If you value rarity and retro-cool more than anything else, and you want a supercar-slayer at a fraction of the cost, this new take on an American classic could well be the model for you.

With high fuel prices and environmental concerns, now might not seem like a good time to invest in a recreation of an American muscle car legend. However, with its impressive performance, low US price and distinctive looks, there are plenty of reasons why the Challenger should be on every performance car fan’s must-drive list. Best of all, straight-line speed is matched by a reassuring chassis and strong brakes – a must for making the most of the UK’s winding roads.

Gostei de ler isto:

"The body is remarkably stable and everything is controllable. However, this is with the ESP on. (...) Turn off the ESP altogether and the Dodge becomes more tail-happy than an over-excited puppy." apr:)

Spied: Dodge Challenger Hellcat Mule

Adding more credence to rumors that Chrysler’s SRT brand is developing a more-powerful, supercharged engine called “Hellcat” are these spy photos. Our shooter caught a Dodge Challenger SRT8 that appears to be a test mule for a new engine.

Rumors suggest that the Dodge Challenger will receive a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine, with power ranging anywhere from 560 hp to 640 hp. It would sit above the existing Challenger SRT8, which has a 6.4-liter V-8 with 470 hp. The idea is to compete, at least in terms of raw horsepower, with rival muscle cars from the Motor City. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500′s supercharged 5.8-liter V-8 makes 662 hp, while the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1′s supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 offers 580 hp — both of which make the Challenger SRT8′S 470-hp figure look comparatively wimpy. One source hints the new Dodge Challenger engine could be backed by a version of the eight-speed automatic transmission that is already spreading throughout all Chrysler Group vehicles.

These spy photos appear to show a development mule packing the Hellcat V-8. The first clue comes from the enlarged brakes, which appear to have enlarged calipers and cross-drilled front discs for increased stopping power. Out back, the pair of round exhausts appears different and larger than those on a standard Dodge Challenger SRT8, and our spy photographer says the produced a sound “nothing short of thunder.”The 20-inch chrome wheels are unique, too. The biggest clue of all, however, is that the test car is missing its driver’s-side headlights. That could mean engineers are experimenting with new air intake systems, potentially drawing cool air from where the headlights normally sit.

The rumored engine would likely debut by 2014 in the 2015 Dodge Challenger. So far, however, Chrysler officials have declined to comment on the possibility of the Hellcat V-8 engine.

2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat poderá ser apresentado em Detroit

Word has it that the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, Chrysler’s answer to the almighty 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, will be introduced at the Detroit Auto Show next week.

While there’s no official info about the newly-developed engine, past rumors claims that the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 mill will deliver about 640 horsepower, more than the Camaro Z/28 and the Shelby GT500, via a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic.

The new Hellcat-powered Challenger is also expected to feature a redesigned front bumper, wider fender arches and a new hood. Production is reportedly scheduled to commence in mid-2014, which means the Hellcat will go on sale by the end of the year.

The 2014 Detroit Auto Show begins on January 13, which means will find out whether this rumor is true or not in less than a week.

SRT Challenger "Hellcat" poderá ser mais potente que o Viper

We've already heard the Challenger Hellcat will be “absolutely sinister" with "stupid power," but it appears it could outgun the SRT Viper.Speaking to Hot Rod Magazine, SRT CEO Ralph Gilles said "We have a situation where ... the flagship car is not the most powerful car in our arsenal." He declined to go into specifics but noted "We have an internal horsepower race as well as an external one."

While Gilles didn't mention any numbers, the SRT Viper has an 8.4-liter V10 engine that develops 640 bhp (477 kW) and 600 lb-ft (814 Nm) of torque. This suggests the Hellcat's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 will produce more than 640 bhp (477 kW) and some reports have even suggested the output could be as high as 700 bhp (477 to 522 kW).

Sem stress...
Também o Mustang Gt500 tem para aí uns 670cv, rivalizando em potência com carros que custam 4x mais.
Deve ser o objectivo da SRT para o "Hellcat"... puro POWERRRRR!!!![:D]
