Jaguar Considering City Car

The Aston Martin Cygnet is a unique proposition in the auto world, as it brings all the luxury and glamor of an Aston into a city car package. The fact that it’s actually a rebadged Toyota iQ seems to have been forgiven by most, so the decision to build such an efficient vehicle was a good one.

Now, it seems that rival company Jaguar is considering creating a competitor for the Cygnet, as the carmaker’s head of design, Ian Callum, let slip. Callum told What Car? that the company sees a market demand for such a vehicle, speaking at the 2011 LA Auto Show.

“'It would be a high-end small car for city use,” Callum said. He went on to offer us an interesting hint: the vehicle might ditch the conventional hatchback shape and arrive in the form of a coupe of small sedan. This raises a lot of questions, such as what platform will be used and what the level of performance will be (we have to remind you that this should be an energy-efficient development), but it’s too early for this.

Brabus' sister company Startech has decided to polish up the 2012 Jaguar XJ's looks with a subtle styling makeover through its individualization program.
The German firm's product lineup includes an aero package comprising of a front apron that incorporates LED daytime running lights into the side air inlets, small rocker panels in front of the rear wheels, new trims for the front fender air vents, a discreet boot lid spoiler and a rear diffuser that packs Startech's stainless-steel trapezoid tailpipes.

The British limo now rides on three-piece, 21-inch forged alloy wheels mounted in wider high-performance tires in sizes 255/35 ZR 21 in front and 295/30 ZR 21 on the rear axle.
The cosmetic makeover continues inside with Startech offering XJ buyers a choice of leather and Alcantara options. The car pictured here features a cream-colored all-leather interior made from soft Mastik leather and black, high-gloss polished piano wood with ship-veneer-type inlays.

Other options include custom made, electrically deployed tables for the rear passengers with leather-trimmed consoles, and a 20 MBit/s GSM modem with an antenna that provides a high-speed internet connection via EDGE, HSDPA or HSPA+ protocols.

Sucessor do X-Type:

Jaguar Presents All-Wheel Drive Versions of 2013 XF and XJ Sedans with Supercharged V6 - Carscoop

Just last month, Jaguar detailed the 2013MY versions of its XF and XJ saloons, both of which benefit from new engines including a 335-horsepower (340PS) supercharged V6 for the XF and XJ and a 237hp (240PS) 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four for the XF, as well as the widespread use of an 8-speed automatic.

But the British brand wasn't done yet with the model year changes as today, Jaguar announced the introduction of all-wheel drive to the 2013 XF and XJ ranges.

The new AWD system, which was evidently developed with the help of sister company Land Rover, will be offered exclusively with the 335hp 3.0-liter supercharged V6 and the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Jaguar said that the all-wheel drive variants of the XF and XJ will be offered in the so called "snow-belt" regions in select markets around the world including North America, Russia, China and Continental Europe. At least for the time being, Jaguar has no plans to offer the AWD variants in the UK.

"Our All-Wheel Drive system preserves all the dynamic qualities of our rear-wheel drive Jaguar saloons in terms of handling, steering quality and ride refinement while adding a new depth of ability in low-grip conditions," said Ian Hoban, Vehicle Line Director at Jaguar.

"The system delivers all the traction benefits you would expect, but the AWD XF and XJ are still very rewarding cars to drive - which was exactly our intention," he added.

Under normal driving and weather conditions, Jaguar's electronically controlled AWD system sends a small amount of “pre-load” torque to the front wheels as the vehicle starts off, and then most torque to the rear wheels once underway.

When necessary, the electronically controlled wet multi-plate clutch can transfer up to 50 percent of available torque to the front wheels, either in response to wheel slip or to pre-empt the possibility of rear-wheel slip, according to the automaker.

The driver can also select a 'Winter Mode', in which case, the system directs more “pre-load” torque to the front wheels before switching to a 30:70 torque share between front and rear to maximize traction on slippery surfaces.

Jaguar says that its engineers recalibrated the suspension and steering systems in the AWD XF and XJ to "match their rear-wheel drive counterparts' driving dynamics".

In the U.S., the 2013 XF AWD 3.0L Supercharged V6 model starts from $53,000 while its 2013 XJ counterpart with the same driveline and engine from $76,700, excluding an $875 destination and delivery charge.

Jaguar Land Rover Mulling Assembly Plant in Saudi Arabia - Carscoop

Aluminum is playing an increasingly important role in the construction of Jaguar-Land Rover’s (JLR) new models, in an effort to decrease weight and thus, reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The most recent example is the brand-new Range Rover that will make its official debut at the upcoming Paris Motor Show.

The use of an all-aluminum monocoque body, which is 39 percent lighter than the outgoing model’s conventional, steel body, and the aluminum front and rear chassis members have resulted in the new SUV weighing a whopping 420 kg (920 pounds) less than the previous model, depending on specification.

"This new aluminum platform delivers significant enhancements in performance and agility, along with an improvement in fuel economy and reduction in CO2 emissions," said Land Rover.

According to a report from Autocar India, JLR's parent company Tata Motors is looking into the possibility of building an assembly line in Saudi Arabia.

The reason is that Saudi Arabian mining company Ma’aden and Alcoa, a leading alumina producer and supplier of many automotive companies, have formed a joint venture to construct the world’s largest aluminum smelter in Saudi Arabia’s eastern province.

Tata Motors’ chairman Ratan Tata confirmed the report: “This smelter could make the production of aluminum in Saudi Arabia very competitive”, he said. “So, taking a really long-term view, if we put an assembly plant there with a large press shop, given our commitment to aluminum in our products, we could have an interesting business case which we are examining today.”

Land Rover isn’t the only one relying heavily on aluminum; Jaguar is also using the lightweight material in its XK and XJ models and plans to do so even more in future products.

Setting up shop in Saudi Arabia could bring other benefits to the two British luxury brands, as the Middle East, North Africa and Asia are markets that could help in their expansion.

Combined sales of Jaguar and Land Rover have increased by 36 percent, to 110,373 units in the current fiscal year. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) business regions, sales are up by 14 percent.
