[h=1]From exemplary to not recommended: Auto Bild Sportscars tyre test[/h]

Tyres are black and round, but a shared shape and colour doesn’t mean all tyres perform the same. This truth was readily apparent in this year’s summer tyre test from Auto Bild Sportscars. The German magazine for sport and performance car fans evaluated nine size 235/35 R19 tyres. One of its aims in doing so was to reveal “dangerous beguilers” amongst the many models on the market today. What it found amongst the tested tyres was performance ranging from ‘exemplary’ to ‘not recommended’.

First place went to the Continental SportContact 6, a tyre the Auto Bild Sportscars testers considered virtually free from shortcomings. The only complaint regarding the SportContact 6, which demonstrated good handling characteristics and safety reserves, was the detection of a “light weakness when measuring rolling resistance.” The Continental tyre was rated ‘exemplary’.

Two further tyres delivered sufficient performance to warrant an ‘exemplary’ rating. These are the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo² and the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. Once again, very little in the way of weaknesses were found in these tyres – the Hankook rubber showed a “tendency to understeer” while the Goodyear tyre displayed “light understeer in the wet.” Apart from these foibles, the pair were well-balanced performers, with the Ventus S1 Evo² doing slightly better in the dry than the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3.

A good performance was also delivered by the Falken Azenis FK510, the only tyre to receive a ‘recommended’ rating. Although the Auto Bild Sportscars testers drew attention to a slight delay in steering response and mediocre ride comfort, they described the Falken tyre as a “balanced sport talent with a short stopping distance on wet surfaces” and balanced wet handling characteristics, dynamic dry handling together with precise, responsive cornering performance and, last but not least, an affordable purchase price.

A trio of tyres – the Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2, Pirelli P Zero and Kumho Ecsta PS91 – were rated ‘satisfactory’. The Dunlop tyre left the competition in its wake in the wet, however it was held back from a better result by “delayed steering response and limited levels of grip on dry surfaces.” The Pirelli rubber’s biggest shortcoming, on the other hand, was its wet performance; the testers noted that stopping distances were a little longer than wished for and the tyre’s aquaplaning performance was only average. As for the Kumho tyre, Auto Bild Sportscars reported “weak lateral control and strong understeer on wet road surfaces, mediocre levels of grip and delayed steering response on dry surfaces, and elevated levels of rolling resistance.” On the plus side, the Ecsta PS91 performed well in the aquaplaning test, stopped within a short distance in the dry and is affordable to buy.

Two of the nine tyres ended the test with a ‘not recommended’ rating. These are the Firestone Firehawk SZ90µ and the Rotalla Setula S Race RU01, and they were rated poorly mainly for their unconvincing performance on wet surfaces. The Firestone tyre was pulled up for its “weak lateral control, strong understeer and long stopping distance on wet road surfaces, mediocre levels of grip, delayed steering response and unbalanced handling on dry surfaces.” The greatest criticism, however, was reserved for the Rotalla model. Auto Bild Sportscars described the Setula S Race RU01 as a “hydrophobic Chinese tyre with dangerously long wet braking distances, a strongly understeering and unbalanced wet handling performance, mediocre grip and lightly spongey handling on dry surfaces.” Both tyres, however, also displayed some positive characteristics, such as (Rotalla) low rolling resistance, low price and (Firestone) low rolling noise and good safety reserves during aquaplaning.

[h=1]Auto Bild summer tyre test: 6 from 20 finalists given ‘exemplary’ rating[/h]

As in previous years, Auto Bild has separated the wheat from the chaff in its 2017 summer tyre test with a qualifying round. This year, the original 52 candidates were whittled down to 20 finalists through wet and dry braking tests.

The size 225/50 R17 W/Y tyres were stopped on a wet road surface from 80km/h and on a dry surface from 100km/h. A Continental tyre, the new PremiumContact 6, achieved the best overall result with its combined braking distance of 69.9 metres.

The braking distances for 12 candidates, on the other hand, were considered simply too long by the Auto Bild test team. These tyres, which had combined braking distances of between 81.5 and 88.7 metres, where the Nordexx NS9000, Delinte DH2, Rovelo RPX 988, Kleber Dynaxer HP3, EP-Tyres Accelera Phi-R, Radar Dimax R8, Formula Energy, Zeetex HP 1000, Tristar Sportpower Radial F105, Achilles 2233 and Autogrip Grip200.

A further 20 tyres with combined braking distances between 77.2 and 81.4 metres were also eliminated during the qualifying round. These were the Apollo Aspire 4G, Nexen N‘Fera SU1, Mabor Sport-Jet 3, Nankang Sportnex AS-2+, Zeta ZTR 10, Aeolus SteeringAce AU 01, BFGoodrich g-Grip, Federal Formoza AZ 01, Hifly HF805, Headway HU901, Viking ProTech HP, Toledo TL 1000, Barum Bravuris 3HM, GT Radial Champiro FE1, Gislaved Ultra Speed, General Altimax Sport, Star Performer TNG UHP 1, Fortuna F2900, Effiplus Himmer II, Blacklion BU66 and Goform GH 18.

In addition to the test-topping Continental tyre, the other finalists are the Hankook Ventus Prime³, Falken Azenis FK510, Pirelli Cinturato P7 Blue, Bridgestone Turanza T001 Evo, Uniroyal RainSport 3, Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, Fulda SportControl 2, Michelin Primacy 3, Sava Intensa UHP2, Vredestein Ultrac Satin, Kumho Ecsta HS51, Toyo Proxes Sport, Yokohama Advan Fleva V701, Leao Nova Force, Avon ZV7, the Maxxis Premitra HP5, Cooper Zeon CS8 and Nokian zLine.

2017 Auto Bild Sports Cars Tyre Test

The Auto Bild sports cars test is usually one of our favourite tests of the year, and this year looks to be no different. Testing nine 235/35 R19 maximum performance tyres using a Focus ST, Auto Bild have focused on the raw performance of these tyres, weighting the score heavily in favour of wet and dry handling.

The Top Three

Sadly, the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S is missing from this test, which means it was a fairly easy win for the Continental Sport Contact 6. The Continental dominated in both dry braking and dry handling, won the wet handling test, but could only manage mid pack for wet braking. The testers also noted the Continental gave them the most driving pleasure from all tyres on test, something which is important from a performance tyre.

Second place was awarded to the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 2 K117. Like the Continental, it proves to be a very balanced tyre, with just a little understeer in the wet the only negative point. The top three were rounded out by the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 which is again a very balanced tyre, with a hint of understeer in the wet.

The Rest

Falken will be pleased with fourth place, beating the more expensive Dunlop tyre in fifth. The Falken FK510 proved to have short wet braking and good dry braking and handling characteristics, but when compared to the best on test the rolling resistance was high, comfort low and the steering was slightly sluggish. The Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2 won the aquaplaning tests, which were combined with excellent wet and dry braking results, but had a poor dry handling score leaving it in fifth overall.

Sixth to last place all had their individual issues which can be seen in the full results below. Only two tyres on test, the mid-range Firestone and budget Rotalla were deemed to be "not recommended", both due to poor wet performances.
