Apple's (AAPL) epic fall on the stock market took a symbolic turn Thursday after its market value again dropped below its top rival's.

A more than 2% fall in Apple's stock price to $90.32 at the close Thursday compresses the value of Apple - once the most valuable company in the world by far - to $494.8 billion. That makes it second fiddle behind Google parent Alphabet(GOOGL) at $499.9 billion.

Shares of Apple have been in freefall this year, dropping more than 14%, amid the company's disappointing first-quarter results. It's the second time this year Alphabet's market value has surpassed Apple's. Apple has gone from being a lift for the market to a huge anchor and it was one of the biggest pressures on the Dow Thursday. Investors have watched $275 billion in market value vanish from Apple since it peaked in early 2015.

Investors are taking a more sobering look at Apple as all signs point to the smartphone market maturing, much as the personal computer market did. Apple reported first-quarter adjusted quarterly earnings of $1.90 a share, which was well below the $2 a share expected by analysts. It's not just a matter of just missing forecasts. Profit fell 18% from the same period a year ago. Revenue also missed expectations, falling about 12% to $50.6 billion, the biggest drop in revenue since the third-quarter of 2001, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Apple has been under intense pressure from investors as its key product - a $650 smartphone - faces stiff competition as the market for pricey phones is now saturated and innovation has stalled. Consumers who wanted a high-end smartphone already have one and sometimes more. New features have been incremental at best and that is prompting many users to keep their phones longer.

Additionally, carriers have changed the terms of subsidies that helped consumers finance phones, which is causing some consumers to consider if the Apple product is worth the premium price. Meanwhile, in the developing world where there's more demand growth for smartphones, Apple must now take on Asian companies making handsets that have lower price tags and are usually running Alphabet's Android operating system. Apple has been slow to innovate and newer products like Apple Pay and Apple Music have fallen flat and demand for other product lines including tablets has been shrinking.

Analysts still remain steadfastly bullish on Apple shares - as they have long been - in a bet that's worked out until the stock hit the wall in February 2015. Analysts still have an 18-month price target on the stock of $123.96.
But the bullishness is fading as the market indicates something is amiss, especially as Alphabet picks up dominance in the low-end smartphone market and Microsoft (MSFT) is focused on profitable cloud services that add functionality to any device be it one running Apple's iOS, Alphabet's Android of its own Windows 10. UBS analyst Steven Milunovich this week cut his price target on Apple to $115 from $120. Milunovich downgraded his profit forecast as the race to buy the latest iPhone seems to be a thing of the past. "Upgrades to the iPhone 6 have been disappointing with an apparent lengthening of the upgrade cycle due to changing carrier plans and less feature differentiation," he wrote in a report to clients.

A minha está em linha com o livro do Walter Isaacson : "Apple's closed architecture only works in the hands of Steve Jobs" (Bill Gates em 2004).

Icahn: We're out of Apple, and it's China's fault

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn told CNBC on Thursday he has sold hisApple position as the tech giant's stock continues to shed value after disappointing earnings.

"We no longer have a position in Apple," Icahn told CNBC's "Power Lunch," noting Apple is a "great company" and CEO Tim Cook is "doing a great job."

Icahn previously owned a little less than a percent of the tech giant's outstanding shares, which were down more than 3 percent midafternoon Thursday after falling more than 6 percent Wednesday. He said he made roughly $2 billion on Apple, a stock he continued to tout as "cheap" despite his reservations.

Icahn said China's attitude toward Apple largely drove him to exit his position.
"You worry a little bit — and maybe more than a little — about China's attitude," Icahn said, later adding that China's government could "come in and make it very difficult for Apple to sell there ... you can do pretty much what you want there."
He added, though, that if China "was basically steadied," he would buy back into Apple.

The company on Tuesday posted quarterly earnings of $1.90 per share on $50.56 billion in revenue, both of which missed Wall Street's expectations.
Apple's sales declined 13 percent from the prior-year period, its first year-over-year revenue drop since 2003. Sales of its key iPhone slid to 51.2 million from 61.2 million the previous year.

Why Apple's fall confirmed my worst fear about EVERY stock: Advisor

One area of weakness for Apple in the quarter was the Greater China segment — comprising mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Revenue for that region fell 26 percent year over year to $12.49 billion. Previously, that area had posted consistent growth for Apple.

Still, "we feel good about China," Cook told CNBC earlier this week.

"We remain very optimistic about the China market over the long term, and we are committed to investing there for the long run," Apple CFO Luca Maestri said Tuesday.
Icahn noted he called Cook to tell him he exited the position.

The activist investor purchased his Apple stake in 2013. He previously told CNBC buying into the company was a "no-brainer."
Last May, Icahn said he had a $240 per share price target on Apple when it traded around $130 per share. As recently as September, Icahn told CNBC he considered buying more of the company's stock, saying it looked cheap.

parei de ler naquela primeira citação fantástica.

Vendam tudo, que eu agradeço daqui a uns meses!
Espalhem o 'apple is doomed' []

Mas vá, foi-me oferecido.

Apple invests $1 billion in Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Chuxing

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) said on Thursday it has invested $1 billion in Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Chuxing, a move that Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said would help the company better understand the critical Chinese market.

The tech giant's rare investment gives it a stake in two burgeoning waves of technology - the sharing economy and car technology - as the iPhone business that propelled it to record profitability shows signs of maturing.

Apple is trying to reinvigorate sales in China, where it has come under greater pressure from regulators, and Cook is traveling to the country this month.

The move aligns Apple with Uber Technologies Inc's chief rival in China, as automakers and technology companies forge new alliances and make cross investments. General Motors (GM.N), for example, recently bought autonomous driving technology company Cruise Automation and has also taken a stake in U.S. ride-sharing company Lyft.

Cook said in an interview that he saw opportunities for Apple and Didi Chuxing to collaborate in the future.
"We are making the investment for a number of strategic reasons, including a chance to learn more about certain segments of the China market," he said. "Of course, we believe it will deliver a strong return for our invested capital over time as well."
Didi Chuxing, formerly known as Didi Kuaidi, said in a statement that this was the single largest investment it has ever received. The company, which previously raised several billion dollars, dominates the ride-sharing market in China. The company said it completes more than 11 million rides a day, with more than 87 percent of the market for private car-hailing in China.
Though Didi Chuxing is valued at upwards of $20 billion, according to a person familiar with its ongoing funding round, the company has been losing billions in a costly battle with Uber for market share in China.

"CONFIDENCE IN CHINA"
Analysts say the deal offers a glimpse of how Apple may diversify its business as sales of the iPhone level off. Apple has emphasized its burgeoning revenue from services such as Apple Music and mobile payment Apple Pay, a strategy that the ride-sharing investment appears to reinforce, said analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights & Strategy.
"After all the hints about the service business and what they would like to do in the future, it’s all starting to fit together," he said.
Investors are eagerly watching to see whether Apple will enter the automotive business. Apple has hired a wide range of automotive experts, and the company is exploring building a self-driving car, sources have told Reuters.
Cook said Apple remained focused on the in-car experience with its CarPlay system, which links smartphones to vehicle infotainment systems.

“That is what we do today in the car business, so we will have to see what the future holds," he said.

Although Apple's sales in China have slumped amid slowing economic growth there, Cook stressed he remained confident in the market.
"(The deal) reflects our excitement about their growing business ... and also our continued confidence in the long term in China’s economy," Cook said.

Apple has enjoyed warmer relations with the Chinese government than some American tech companies, but regulators recently shut down its online book and film services, triggering concerns among investors. The true value of Apple's investment in Didi might be in shoring up that relationship, said analyst Ben Bajarin of Creative Strategies.
"This is as much about sending signals about their seriousness in that country as it is about helping Didi build a ride-sharing platform," he said.

Didi Chuxing is a poster child for Chinese technology, a critical sector in Beijing's goal to shift the economy toward higher-value services.
Didi Chuxing executives have met with some of China's top leaders, including President Xi Jinping last December.

Jean Liu, Didi's president, is the daughter of Liu Chuanzhi, the politically connected founder of Chinese computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd (0992.HK).

"There's a lot of things we can work on together," she said when asked whether Didi Chuxing would help Apple's government relations in China.

Boas tardes.
