What ever happened to Alpine Renault? At the 2016 Geneva Auto Show Renault introduced an Alpine concept called ‘Vision’, this was a surprisingly ‘retro’ looking car, not what I would have expected from my friends at Renault Design.

The classic A110 model was first introduced in 1961 and remained in production until 1977; this was a cool little car that won many international rallies. It was never a beautiful looking machine but was well proportioned, tough looking and pleasing to look at.

Dieppe based Alpine, was originally an independent company started by local garage owner Jean Rédélé, Alpine initially specialized in tuning Renault cars and later in building fiberglass bodied Renault based sports cars. Alpine established a fine competition history with the Alpine A110 winning the 1973 Monte Carlo Rally and World Rally Championship. The successor was the Alpine A310, initially powered by a tuned 17TS/Gordini four-cylinder engine, still rear-mounted like the A110. The first model of the A310, built between 1971-1976, was a four-cylinder with six headlights. It was at this time that I became involved with Alpine whilst working with UK designer Trevor Fiore. In 1976 the A310 was restyled with input from myself, the project was under the guidance of Renault Design Chief Robert Opron. This car was fitted with a more powerful and newly developed 90-degree 2,664 cc V6 PRV engine, as used in some Renaults, Volvos and Peugeots. The original A310 was first shown at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. The prototype A310 developed by Fiore, Jim English and Turin based design company Coggiola had louvres across the rear glass which at that time were considered very fashionable; these were not carried over to the production model.

The original 1971 car was never wind tunnel tested and suffered from both front end lift and rear instability and one of my jobs for the 1976 model was to counter these problems with small aerodynamic additions. The other interesting job was to design an alloy wheel for the A110, Alpine Renault 5 and the A310. During the previous years Monte Carlo Rally all the works cars had retired with damaged rear suspension caused by heavy lumps of ice being frozen between the wheel spokes and so putting the wheels out of balance. The task was to design a wheel that was sufficiently smooth that snow would not stick to it. There is an image here that shows the problem! I always preferred the three-slot version of the smooth wheel, the four-slot style tended to look static.

It was because of working with Alpine during this period that I came to know and love the seaside town of Dieppe and to gain a great many friends at the company – this is how we ended up with Alpine A610 rear lights on the Lotus Elan!

I have therefore been waiting with great anticipation for the latest version of Renault’s ideas for a ‘New Alpine’. We have seen some truly wonderful sketches from the team at Renault Design and great looking concept cars, both the A110 DeZir and the Alpine A110 Concept were truly stunning; but I hate to say that what was shown at Geneva was not in the same class! I am sure that my criticism will not please good friends at Renault but ‘Retro Pastiche’ cannot be the way the car should look.

The side sculpting of the A110 came originally from the A106 and later A108 where there was an air intake ahead of the rear wheel that fed air to the rear mounted radiators and engine bay. By the time of the A110 the duct was no longer needed but the sculpture remained and now, for no good reason at all, it is back on the ‘Vision’, why? In side view the ‘Vision’ concept looks fat and a bit heavy, particularly in the side view with the red, white and blue graphics, something that could never be said of the original.

If this car was not proposed as a new Alpine A110 then it would be no more than a ‘just OK’ concept and would maybe have come from a less glorious company, but from Alpine Renault, it is a disappointment.
