Land Rover has prepared itself ready for when the recession ends by investing heavily in its three top-end models.
Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover all get new engines, significant front-end styling changes, massive interior improvements, improved handling and many other detail changes.
Relaunched as Discovery 4, Land Rover’s most versatile model gets a facelift and around 3000 changed parts, which is roughly the same as when the leap was made from Disco 1 to 2.
‘We’ve given the front a complete change of personality,’ says Land Rover’s design chief Gerry McGovern, whose objective was a premium, less stark, more modern look.
Discovery 4’s package of changes include:
• Super torquey 3.0-litre TDV6 engine, producing 241bhp/442lb ft, yet is more economical and less polluting than the previous 2.7 unit (which still continues for the time being). Mpg is 30.4 and CO2 emissions are 244 kg/m.
• New LED bi-xenon lighting
• Redesigned interior, including a fresh new dash
• Improved handling and ride
• Keyless entry and pushbutton starting
• Terrain Response ‘Sand’ position now has new launch control for gentle initial acceleration
• Tow Assist cameras to help trailer connection and reversing, plus Trailer Stability Assist to detect and stop unwanted snaking
• DAB digital radio
• 360degree cameras for manoeuvring in tight spots when parking or off-roading
• Improved 6-speed ZF autoshift transmission
• More powerful brakes
Discovery 4 is due to go on sale from September 2009. No price information is currently available. Read the full story from the vehicle’s launch in the May edition of Land Rover Owner International, on sale from Wednesday April 22.
