F1 - 2016

Drivers pressure FIA to use Telemetry data and penalize changing lanes under breaking

Summary:

  • At the drivers briefing Verstappen got criticism from fellow drivers. Romain Grosjean began the discussion, followed by Sebastian Vettel , Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso had the final word. A team manager said that it must be really important to Kimi because he spoke about it for 3 minutes
  • When the discussion turned to his move on Hamilton in Suzuka, Verstappen replied "I have not been punished. So I did nothing wrong" Then Verstappen stated that he braked 10 meters later than usual at suzuka.
  • The drivers pushed FIA race director Charlie Whiting to use telemetry data to make a decision in similar cases. Whiting promised he would check telemetry data in doubtful cases in the future. Drivers asked for a rule which makes it illegal to change lanes once a driver hits the brakes
  • Nico Hülkenberg makes clear potential risk of these actions. "You sit all cozy at home on the couch. From the onboard camera, it looks as if there is one meter on the left or right, where you can naturally lead them in peace. Do you know how narrow actually the road is when you are driving at 330 km / h? If you are already on the brake and the other driver is on your side, you can't just brake and steer and brake again! Then you end up going off like Lewis. Or crash in the wall. "
  • Jenson Button made it clear that when overtaking it is not just the defender who brakes on the limit. The man behind needs to brake later even more and lane change can be dangerous.
  • Hulkenberg says nobody should risk lives of other drivers or fans because in situations like that it could lead to a big accident. Button agrees with that and says they shouldn't wait for an accident to make changes.
  • Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko doesn't understand the actions of other drivers. "Let them learn to brake. Max is doing well."
  • Hulkenberg says "Maybe with Red Bull it is the way it goes under braking, because the car has brutal downforce. Watching Ricciardo, sometimes he brakes too late when he starts to overtake. In that case, my car would land on the moon"
  • Fernando Alonso ended the discussion reminding them of his accident in Melbourne. He admitted it wasn't Gutierrez's fault, but wanted to show the possible consequences. "If you are at 300 km/h and close to the vehicle in front and then forced off to correct in the short term, it throws you off."

Quem o viu e quem o vê....all grown up [:)]
