oyota is recalling nearly one million vehicles worldwide, including the Prius, Corolla and Avensis, for a steering column fault.
Models built during September 2002-November 2005 are affected. Besides the Prius, Corolla and Avensis, the other cars recalled are the Wish, Isis, Corolla Runx, Corolla Fielder, Corolla Spacio, Allex and Ractis. Around 240,000 cars sold in Europe are affected.
Toyota has recalled these cars following over 30 complaints about loss of steering control. This has been caused by a problem with the steering shafts and sliding yokes, which can come loose and crack, especially if the steering wheel is turned to the 'lock' position at low speed or the wheels hit a kerb. It will be contacting known owners this month, or owners can call Toyota Customer Services for further information.
Honda has also announced a recall this week: around 423,350 Fit (Jazz), Stream, Civic, Civic Hybrid, CR-V, Mobilio, Integra and Step-Wgn models built April 2001-March 2002 are to be recalled in Japan for an ignition fault. Models with automatic transmission only are affected; they have faulty key interlocks which may allow the key to be removed from the ignition when the gear lever is not in 'park' setting. This problem has already been investigated in the US.
