Driving the 400-HP, lightweight Morgan Supersport 400 | Henry Catchpole - The Driver's Seat
Hand built in Malvern in the UK, the new Morgan Supersport 400 looks a million dollars but is not a limited run restomod with a seven-figure price tag. It is the most powerful and possibly the best model that the company has made since 1909. It might also be a beacon for the whole performance car industry because the Supersport blends restomod with mainstream in a very inspiring way.

In this episode of The Driver’s Seat on Hagerty, Henry Catchpole takes a look behind the scenes at the Morgan factory on Pickersleigh Road to see how the company is embracing technology to preserve its past. We see the latest, exclusive Midsummer Coupe, watch metal being worked, wood being fashioned and find a very early, three-wheeled Morgan from the company’s long history.

Henry Catchpole also takes the stunning new Supersport 400 out to some beautiful roads in Wales to put it through its paces. With over 400hp from its 3-litre, turbocharged, straight-six engine and a kerb weight of just 2579lb (1170kg) it certainly has very modern performance. In fact it has the same power to weight ratio as a 992.2 Porsche GT3 and a Corvette E-Ray. It will hit 62mph in just 3.6 seconds and go on to 180mph, but is also remarkably refined. The Supersport starts at £109,000 and the top of the range 400 costs from £139,000.

Back at the factory, we talk to Morgan’s Chief Design Officer, Jonathan Wells, about the general philosophy of Morgan today and how it will approach the future. And talking of the future, did you know that there was nearly a Morgan EV a few years ago? And are you aware of the link between Morgan and Rimac? It’s all in the film.

Richard Hammond Can’t Take This 400bhp Morgan Supersport 400 Seriously
Richard Hammond attempts a serious road test of the Morgan Supersport 400 but the moment Morgan’s 400bhp, 1,170kg sports car is put into Sport mode, any chance of a straight face disappears. With a BMW B58 straight-six, 500Nm of torque, an eight-speed ZF gearbox, huge brakes and a bonded-aluminium platform beneath its classic hand-built body, this is a very different Morgan from the older car Richard’s late father owned. With almost Porsche 911 GT3 RS-like power-to-weight performance and a price of more than £160,000 in this specification, is this really a second car or could it be the only car you need?

Morgan Supersport 400 Review
The Morgan Supersport 400 (£135,558 starting in the UK) is a rather unique British roadster, and the most powerful Morgan ever made. It has 402 horsepower from its BMW-sourced inline 6 turbo engine, and has a claimed 0-100km time of just 3.6 seconds. It also sports several visual and performance changes over the standard Supersport, like front wing vents and new lightweight wheels. But its price puts it up against some rather serious competition. Will this retro-styled roadster be able to keep up with the big dogs?
