Nissan boss confirms Datsun brand will return in 2014 to increase sales in developing markets

We brought the news back in September last year and now it's official - Nissan will revive the Datsun brand. In an announcement on a trip to Indonesia, Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn confirmed that Datsun-branded vehicles will go on sale in 2014, and revealed the new logo you see here.

Datsun made its name with the 240Z sports car and models such as the Cherry and Sunny hatchbacks, but was rebranded in the UK as Nissan in the Eighties. The revived name will be seen on cars initially being sold in the Indonesian, Indian and Russian markets. Ghosn announced that Nissan would be investing around £250m in Indonesia to increase sales in that country to 250,000 by 2014.

Ghosn has been reported as describing the new Datsun model as: "It's a green car, affordable car, small displacement, high local content. It's going to be a generous car." He also added: "Datsun represents 80 years of accumulated Japanese carmaking expertise, and is an important part of Nissan's DNA."

Datsun will join Infiniti as the second sub-brand from Nissan, and it's set to challenge Dacia - which is the value-for-money offshoot from Nissan's technical partner Renault.
