Question: Is it really safe to install safety film on the side windows of a car? How can one break the glass and escape from the vehicle in the event of an accident, where one might be under water for example?
Answer: The addition of security film to auto glass makes illegal entry more difficult. A concern is sometimes raised that is this also makes emergency exit more difficult. Here is what can be said in response to this concern:
1) Laminated glass is becoming very commonly used in auto side lites by auto manufacturers. Emergency rescue workers are already well-equipped to rescue occupants via egress through laminated windscreens and side lites. It is difficult to see why any special problem is presented by the use of safety films. As noted and explained in part 3 below, filmed tempered glass may, in fact, be easier to deal with in a flood situation than laminated glass. Tempered glass pelletizes when broken and, when covered with safety film on its interior, can provide easier egress in emergency escapes because of its unique structural properties.
2) Manually operated windows can often simply be rolled down in an emergency unless unusual damage is done to the crank mechanism.
3) If the windows are motor driven and there is an electrical failure in the car, a simple small hammer or a device such as the "life hammer" can be used to break a filmed tempered side lite from the inside. Because the pane is concave with respect to the interior, it easily pushes out. From the outside, the window is in the shape of an arch and is extremely strong, and exceedingly difficult to push in. But pushing from the inside out allows the passenger to rather easily push away the filmed glass quickly and safely. Buy one of these simple hammer tools and keep it accessible.
Special Note: If one finds himself amidst rising flood waters trapped in a vehicle with safety film on the side windows, take the following precautions:
a) If electrical power is still operable, it is wise to always immediately roll down the side windows to allow escape, long before it is necessary to do so. Imminent electrical failure is nearly a certainty in flooding situations. If water rises to the door level region, it can be extremely difficult to open the door and window egress may be the only option. Failure to roll down the windows could result in personal endangerment should the waters rise above window level. The doors can only be opened when the interior of the vehicle is flooded with water to equalize the water pressure holding the door closed. Having the windows already rolled down allows for easier escape.
b) If electrical power has failed in the car and you are unable to open the door or roll down windows to escape, and flood waters are still below window level, use the life hammer tool to break the side window glass. When it fractures, the glass panel may be pushed outwardly easily with hands or feet. The film covering the glass surface will prevent injury in this process. Do not wait until flood waters climb above the window level as this will pressurize the filmed glass, making it difficult to push outwardly even if broken with the life hammer.
c) If the window is rolled up and the water level rises above window level, with or without safety film on the glass, you are at great risk. The window must be broken, allowing water to enter and fill the vehicle as you exit and swim to safety. A filmed window may be struck and broken with a claw hammer, claw first, so as to penetrate the film, and then pulled inwardly by means of the hammer. This should clear the window and allow an exit and swim to safety.
4) Finally, given the sheer numbers of smash-and-grab break-ins in many cities in the world, the chance of being attacked in a smash-and-grab attempt is surely vastly higher than being caught underwater unable break a window to escape. But those who find themselves in flood-prone cities would do well to heed the advice in part 3 above.
